What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a plain-text file at the root of a site summarising what it is and does, in a form AI assistants can read and quote cheaply. It is a proposed convention rather than an official standard.
In more detail
The idea is to give a model a compact, factual description instead of making it infer one from marketing pages. Google has said it is not required for its own AI features, and support across assistants is uneven — but it costs almost nothing and the same discipline it forces, stating plainly what you do, improves the pages a crawler reads anyway.
Why it matters for your site
Getting quoted accurately in an AI answer is now a meaningful referral source. A model that has to guess what your product does will sometimes guess wrong, and its answer is what the person reads.
