Built with Wix

Check a Wix site

Wix has improved substantially on the technical side and most of the old complaints no longer apply. What remains is what you control: apps you installed, code you added, and settings that were right during the build and wrong afterwards.

  • Your payment password is visible to anyone

It is sitting in your website’s code, where any visitor can read it.

  • A settings file can be downloaded by anyone

It contains the keys to your database.

  • Your security certificate expires in 9 days

Visitors will see a red warning page when it does.

  • Google is told not to show 4 of your pages

Almost certainly a mistake left over from building the site.

  • 7 pictures have no description

People using a screen reader cannot tell what they are.

What tends to go wrong on Wix

None of this means you did something careless. These are the defaults.

  • Third-party apps with broad access

An app installed from the marketplace runs on your pages with the permissions you granted it. Most people grant them once and never review the list.

  • Velo code holding credentials

Custom code written in the front end is served to visitors, so any key in it is public.

  • Pages excluded from search

The per-page SEO panel has an indexing switch that is easy to leave off from a staging phase.

  • Alt text left empty

It is optional in the editor, so it usually is empty — which affects both screen readers and image search.

Every fix is written for plain English

Findings do not stop at telling you something is wrong. Each one comes with the change to make, in five versions — including one you can paste straight into a message to whoever built it and one written with no jargon at all.
